Chin woman lost leg due to landmine

A 26-year-old mother lost her right leg when she stepped on a landmine near Satawm Village in Chin State around 5 p.m. on Saturday (Feb 18, 2023). While Lal Tan Puii was traveling with her brother-in-law on a bike towards Leilet, they stopped near Satawm village to take a break. She stepped on the landmine while walking near the side of the road. It is not known who planted the landmine.

She was taken to Mercy clinic in Zokhawthar around 10 p.m. After receiving treatment, she was transferred to Champhai Hospital.

Satawm village is in Falam Township, Chin State, Myanmar, near the Indian border, and is approximately 20 miles from Zokhawthar village in Champhai district, Mizoram, India.

Landmines have been a growing problem in Chin State and Myanmar after people’s resistance forces stepped up their campaigns against the military junta.
