50,000 students enroll in Chin State schools – RFA
The Radio Free Asia (RFA) Chin program reported on Jun 8, 2023, that approximately 50,000 students were enrolled in around 400 schools that were open in Chin State this year, citing data from the Chin State Education Office.
Furthermore, the RFA reported that the 2023-24 academic year witnessed the highest number of school openings and student enrollments in Chin State in over two years, following the military coup.
One concerned parent shared, “Our children had been unable to attend school for three years. Now, a child must begin kindergarten at the age of eight. As our children continue to grow, it is imperative for us to send them to school.”
According to the enrollment list provided by the Chin State Education Office, Paletwa Township had the highest number of students with over 22,000 enrolled. Tedim Township followed with nearly ten thousand students, while Tonzang Township had more than 6,000 students. Falam Township reported over 3,700 students, whereas Hakha Township recorded over three thousand students. Mutupi Township had more than 2,500 students, Mindat Township had over 1,500 students, and Kanpetlet Township had 296 students.
Despite having approximately ten thousand teachers in Chin State before the military coup in 2021, more than half of them joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). Consequently, only slightly over four thousand teachers remained in Chin State schools.
