New Burmese language diploma program announced by ICA and Mizoram University

Aizawl, March 27, 2026 — The Institute of Chin Affairs Inc. (ICA), in collaboration with Mizoram University (MZU), has announced the launch of a new Diploma in Burmese Language and Communication Skills, set to begin in April 2026.

The program aims to equip students with practical language proficiency while deepening their understanding of Myanmar’s culture, society, and political landscape. Burmese, the official language of Myanmar, is spoken by a majority of the population and is considered essential for engaging with the country’s diverse communities and institutions.

Given India’s extensive 1,600-kilometre border with Myanmar and their longstanding cultural and historical ties, the course is expected to benefit students seeking careers with international NGOs, civil society organizations, religious groups, and government agencies working in Myanmar and along the border regions.

The course will be led by Salai Za Lian Pum, a native Burmese speaker fluent in Mizo, allowing instruction to be delivered in both languages. The one-year program is divided into two semesters, each comprising 60 hours of classroom teaching and 30 hours of self-study. Participants will learn Burmese script, grammar, vocabulary, and develop skills in speaking and writing.

Students may opt to complete one semester for a certificate or both semesters for a full diploma. The course fee is set at Rs. 2,000 per semester, inclusive of study materials.

Applications are now open, with interested candidates encouraged to apply online. To learn more and apply: https://mzu.edu.in/mizoram-university-and-institute-of-chin-affairs-burmese-language-course-2/
